Dorothy Sanders (Dot) Shaw, 90, passed away on February 23, 2025, surrounded by family at her bedside. Born August 13, 1934, Dot was preceded in death by her parents, Beatrice Bailey and Charles Penn Sanders of Gulfport, Mississippi. She is survived by her sister, Martha Kimes of East Point, GA, and her children, Allison Shaw Berg (Bill) of Decatur, GA, Karen Shaw Moore (Travis Gibbs) of Birmingham, AL, and Keith Shaw (Peggy) of Flint Hill, VA. Dot dearly loved her grandchildren Lauren Frances Evans (Steve), William Berg (Molly), Len Berg (Llewellyn), and Kate Berg (fiancée Jackson Hall), great grandchildren Agnes and Edie Evans and Rae Berg. Dot was also beloved by her nephews Chris Kimes (Amy) and Kent Kimes (Kim) and all their children.
Dot attended Gulfport High School, worked at the local drugstore at the cosmetics counter and directed plays in the backyard with neighborhood kids. Dot graduated with her bachelor's degree in Sociology with a minor in journalism and psychology from Mississippi State College for Women (MSCW) in 1956. She began her career in civil service with the Air Force in Warner Robins, GA as a logistics analyst. She lived close by the base in Macon, GA. where she met and married Wayne Shaw and where they raised their family. Dot was a faithful member of Mulberry Street United Methodist Church where she taught second grade Sunday School and went on mission trips and service projects with the youth group. She served as president of the Macon Jaycettes civic club in the '60s. and in the late '70s she completed her MBA taking courses at night from Georgia College. She taught college level business classes at the Macon College extension at the AFB.
In 1984 Dot had a promotion opportunity with the Air Force and relocated to Dayton, Ohio, to Wright Patterson AFB where she furthered her career. There she enjoyed Volks marches (local hiking club) and traveling with friends. In 1986 Dot moved to work as a budget analyst at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. She had great memories of exploring the DC area, hosting friends and family to visit the area museums and events and enjoyed attending plays at the local theaters.
Dot retired from the Pentagon at age 56 and then began her second career. She obtained her real estate license and worked as a Century 21 realtor for the next eight years. In 1998 Dot moved back to Georgia to be closer to her two daughters and grandchildren. She attended Oak Grove United Methodist Church for many years, led a Sunday School class and made many cherished friends there. She later joined St. Matthews Episcopal Church where she was active in taking sacraments to homebound members and participating in Café Theology discussion group. She stayed very busy and adventurous, taking classes in writing at Georgia College in Milledgeville, traveling to study abroad in France and Italy, working as a substitute teacher for Gwinnett County Schools, attending grandchildren's events, becoming active in the Gwinnett County Democratic Party, and served as a delegate to the 2012 Georgia Democratic Convention. Dot worked passionately for social justice as a member of the Grandmothers for Peace organization in Atlanta and was part of an aspiring writers club.
Dot was an avid reader and enjoyed movies, theater, opera, golf, the Atlanta Braves, politics, theology, writing, fashion, board games, masterpiece theater on PBS, crossword puzzles, swimming and water aerobics. Dot most of all enjoyed being with family and friends and loved them dearly.
Her family will receive guest from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM Saturday March 01, 2025 at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home & Crematory 2773 N Decatur Rd Decatur, Georgia 30033. Family will host a memorial service at Dunwoody United Methodist Church, 1548 Mt Vernon Rd, Dunwoody, Georgia 30338, Sunday March 02, 2025 at 1:30 PM. Private interment will be held in Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mount Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, Georgia 30328.
