Mrs. Dorothy Queen Smith, age 95, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2024, surrounded by her loving family and friends at Kingsbridge Retirement Center.
Dot was born on July 22, 1929, in Good Hope, Georgia, the third of six children to Joseph and Mable Meadows Queen. From a young age, Dot's greatest passion was her family.
After graduating from high school, Dot discovered her love for numbers while working at Farmers Bank in Monroe, Georgia. In 1950, she followed her heart to Atlanta, where she began a new chapter in her life. She lived in a boarding house on Ponce de Leon Avenue and started working for Fulton Federal Bank.
Her life changed forever on a double date, where she met the love of her life, Carl Smith. The two were married on November 8, 1953, and shared 67 wonderful years together. They began their life in East Point, Georgia, where their daughter, Connie, was born in 1954. Shortly after, they moved to Decatur, Georgia, and welcomed their son, Mike, in 1956.
Dot and Carl's life together took them to Jacksonville, Florida, Plantation, Florida, and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, before ultimately returning to Atlanta in 1969. Once settled back in Atlanta, Dot rejoined the workforce at Decatur Federal Savings and Loan, where she worked for 20 years before retiring.
Dot and Carl loved to travel and shared adventures with friends, visiting destinations like Canada, Russia, Greece, Italy, France, Alaska, Hawaii, England, and Germany.
Dot was an avid volunteer, generously giving her time to her children's schools and actively participating in her church community. Her faith and service to others were central to her life, and she will be remembered for her quiet kindness, loyalty, dedication to family, and tireless work ethic.
Dot is survived by her daughter, Connie Casey (Bill), and son, Mike Smith (Robin); grandchildren, Michael Casey (Rany) and Will Casey (Jaimie); great-grandson, Dean; her 3 beloved sisters, Lillian Cross, Paula Byrd, Nelda Wilbanks, and a host of loving relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dot's memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, in honor of her great-grandson, Dean. (jdrf.org)
