Douglas Elwood Murphy

December 26, 1940 — January 17, 2018

Doug Murphy was born the day after Christmas, 1940 in Passaic, NJ. He moved to Bay Shore, NY, at 15 and graduated from Bay Shore High School in 1958. He attended his father's Alma Mater, Union College, in Schenectady, NY, and earned his BS in Finance from Adelphi University on Long Island.
His hobbies were sailing, golfing, and bowling. He moved to Georgia in the early 1990's and became an avid Georgia Bulldogs football fan. After a career in the finance field, he retired from Blue Cross-Blue Shield in 2002.
Doug contributed many years of volunteer service at the Atlanta VA Medical Center representing the Sons of the American Legion. He received numerous awards for his volunteer service including The President's Lifetime Achievement Award, signed by President Barack Obama, in 2015. Doug was very active in the Sons of the American Legion and held many offices both locally and nationally.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Murphy, and sister, Sally Flavin. He is survived by his brother, Richard Murphy of Plantation, FL, his niece, Kathy Flavin of Kennesaw, Ga, and his companion Sarah Kay Harpring of Decatur, GA. A memorial service will be held Sunday Jan. 28th at 2:00 PM at the American Legion Post 1 located at 2800 Shallowford Rd NE, Atlanta, GA, 30341.
