Dr. Edward William Kallal

Dr. Edward W Kallal, age 93, passed away in Atlanta on Nov. 26, 2010, rejoining his wife Mary Elizabeth Lowe Kallal. A native of Chicago IL, he graduated from Loyola School of Medicine in Chicago, was a surgeon practicing at Cook County Hospital and St Anthony's Hospital, both in Chicago, Hinsdale Hospital, Hinsdale IL, and La Grange Community Memorial Hospital in La Grange IL. A sole practitioner, at various times he was chief of surgery at both Hinsdale Hospital and St. Anthony's, while maintaining offices in Chicago and La Grange Park. Ed met his late wife Mary during World War II in Americus GA, where he was flight surgeon with the Army Air Corps. He went on to serve overseas, mainly in India with a unit flying gasoline over the Himalayas to the Chinese. Ed and Mary married in 1946. They lived in Chicago and La Grange until he retired. They moved to Georgia, Mary's native state, in 1996. Survivors include his children, Mary K Culpepper of Longwood FL, Cookie Walsh and her husband John of Dillsburg, PA, and Edward Kallal, Jr. and his wife Cindy of Atlanta. He had seven grandchildren, Jordan Shaffer, Marcy Youngblood, Amy Culpepper, Wes and Maggie Walsh, and Edward and Adam Kallal; and great grandchildren, Sean and Jackie Youngblood. In addition to his wife Mary, he was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Anna Kallal, brother Tom Kallal, sisters Lillian and Marie Kallal, son-in-law William Culpepper and grandchild Marcy Youngblood. Services will be held on Friday Dec. 3 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1722 Oak Grove Road, Decatur, GA 30033. Visitation will start at 9 am, followed by the 10 am service. Internment will be in Buena Vista GA following the funeral at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Oak Grove UMC or to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Drive NE Atlanta GA 30319. A. S. Turner & Sons
