Floyd R. Sanders, Jr., MD, a longtime Decatur resident and physician, died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 90 on April 24, 2010 at Lanier Village Estates in Gainesville, GA, where he had been living since the summer of 2007. Dr. Sanders was born in Atlanta, GA, the only child of Willie and Floyd Sanders, Sr.  He graduated from Decatur Boys High School, Emory University, and the Medical College of Georgia. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and throughout his life he always spoke highly of the values of scouting. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving in the U. S. Navy Medical Corps.  He practiced family medicine for 45 years in Decatur, GA, retiring in 1995. He was instrumental in the planning and construction of DeKalb Medical Center and served as Chief of Staff from 1962 to 1964. He served on the DeKalb Hospital Authority from 1965 to 1996 and for 26 years served as chairman of the authority’s Building Committee.  He was president of the DeKalb Medical Society in 1960 and    served on the Board of Directors of DeKalb Medical Center until 1997.  A committed Christian, Dr. Sanders was a member of Decatur First United Methodist Church.  His two loves in life were practicing medicine and spending time with his family, especially at Lake Burton.  He will be remembered by all who knew him as a kind and thoughtful gentleman.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Teressa (Tissy) Rutland Sanders and is survived by his daughter, T. Irene Sanders of Washington, DC; son, F. Stuart Sanders, MD and his wife Lynne of Clarkesville, GA; grandchildren, Carson Sanders, Amanda Sanders, and Jordan Sanders.  Carson and Amanda are following in their grandfather’s footsteps at the Medical College of Georgia.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. M. Friday, April 30th at Decatur First United Methodist Church with Bishop L. Bevel Jones officiating. Interment Decatur Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9:30 P.M.
