Dr. George I. Zarour departed this life peacefully on Friday, March 16, 2007 in Atlanta. He was born in Jerusalem on July 27, 1931, and has lived in Beirut, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. He leaves to cherish his legacy his devoted and loving wife Nadia, his daughter Sandra Haddad of Atlanta, his two sons Sami Zarour of Washington, D.C. and Randy Zarour of Atlanta, his five loving grandchildren Seri, Dana, Mona, Stephanie and George, and his sister Judith of Beirut. His career focused on furthering the field of science education. He received a B.A. in Chemistry and Mathematics and an M.A. in Education from the American University of Beirut, and a Ph.D. in Education and Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin. He was a professor, director of the Division of Education Programs, and acting academic Vice President at the American University of Beirut. He was a senior Fulbright scholar with the University of Maryland, a visiting professor at Florida State University, and a senior General Educator for the World Bank, with educational missions in a host of countries around the world. George was a member and fellow in several National and International Science Associations, and published a multitude of articles, textbooks, and teacher's guides. His illustrious career in the field of education is best exemplified by going back to the beginning, to one of his earliest posts as a Physics and Chemistry teacher in an American high school: this week, at least fifteen of his students commemorated his legacy with testimonials on the impact he had on their lives and careers when he taught them over fifty years ago. Dr. Zarour will always be remembered as a quiet man of dignity with a wry sense of humor shared by all his children. He lived by the guiding motto of his alma mater: "That they may have life, and have it more abundantly".
