Glen Gunter Waldrop, 100, of Atlanta, died on Wednesday, January 18, 2017. Glen was born on October 27, 1916 in Villa Rica, GA., one of ten children born to the late James and Beulah (Gunter) Waldrop. He is predeceased by his devoted wife of seventy-three years, Anne Tanner Waldrop. Glen is survived by their two children, daughter Linda Smith (Bob) and son Jim Waldrop (Madeline), adoring granddaughters, Libby Souder (Brady), Rebecca Norris (Bryan) and Ashley Els (Justin) and five great grandsons. He is also survived by his sister Laura Waldrop Pond, and sister-in-law Dorothy Smith, as well as many nieces, nephews and their families.
Glen received his B.A. degree from Mercer University, in Macon, GA. While a college student he felt called into the ministry at the early age of 20 and served his first Pastorate at the age of 21. After college he entered the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, KY, where he received his Master of Divinity degree. He later received his Doctor of Divinity degree from Mercer University.
In 1958 Glen accepted the call as the first Pastor of Briarcliff Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA, serving there for eighteen years. In 1976 he accepted a call from First Baptist Church Columbia, SC as an Associate Pastor and later as the Interim Pastor. He served there until 1981. Over his career Glen pastored fourteen churches including First Baptist Church McDonough, GA, Briarcliff Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA, and First Baptist Church Columbia, SC. Later in his so-called retirement he served as Interim Pastor for eight churches.
Even with his Pastorates, he still found time to be involved in Baptist denominational activities serving as Trustee of the Georgia Baptist Hospital, Trustee of Mercer University, Director of the Home Mission Board, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, Member of the General Board of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, and many other positions.
Glen loved his wife, Anne and his family more than life itself. He was a devoted Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather. He loved spending time at the lake with his family. He also enjoyed traveling and spending time with friends. Glen was known for his generous spirit and his wonderful sense of humor. His love for God manifested itself in his love for others.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Briarcliff Baptist Church, 3039 Briarcliff Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30329. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs, GA.
