Dr. Herschel F. Hatcher, Jr., of Decatur, passed peacefully into eternity, Thursday, December 23, 2010 in Duluth. GA. He was predeceased by his wife, Martha Roberts Hatcher to whom he was married for 62 years and is survived by his daughter, Lynn Totaro and son-in-law, John; son, Herschel Hatcher, III, and daughter-in-law, Gail, two grandsons, IV and Branson, and by his beloved nieces and nephews. He was born in Moultrie, GA in 1922 to Herschel and Ruth Hatcher, Sr. He was the youngest of four children. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1945, he married Martha, and then attended Stetson University, and Emory Dental School where he graduated with a DDS degree in 1953. He practiced dentistry in Decatur until he was 80 years old. He served as president of the Georgia Dental Association. He was an avid golfer, musician, and bridge player. He played clarinet and saxophone in high school and in the Army band. In the early 1950's he sang on the "Baptist Hour", which was heard worldwide on the radio. He was active in the N. Decatur Methodist choir for many years. In his 80's, he enrolled at Georgia Perimeter College where he began a major in Fine Arts. A celebration of his life will be held at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 56566, Atlanta, GA 30343 or to the Music Department at Stetson University, 421 N. Woodland Blvd., Deland, FL 32723. The family will receive friends Monday, December 27th from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M.
