JOHNSON, Jackie Wooddall, Ph.D

It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Jackie Johnson announces her death from her battle with ovarian cancer and the side effects of protracted treatment. Jackie died on August 12, 2014. She was a native of Atlanta born on November 25, 1941. She graduated from Southwest High School in 1959 and earned both her Masters and Ph.D degrees in psychology from Georgia State University. She was a cofounder of the Atlanta Psychotherapy Associates where she practiced outpatient psychotherapy for 25 years. Aside from her career as a psychologist, among her proudest achievements was co-chairing the first two Human Rights Campaign dinner/fundraisers in 1988 and 1989. These fundraisers were at the forefront of great awareness and change for all of us. Jackie was a committed advocate for gay rights, human equality, and the lifelong growth and development of human potential. Among her passions in life were her family, her friends, ALTA tennis, poker, traveling, and cooking. She is survived by her long-term partner, Dr. Sherry McHenry, sons, Jay Eric Johnson (Alice) and Christopher Stewart Johnson (Beverly), grandchildren, Isabelle, William, Wyatt, and Eleanor. She is also survived by her sister, Frances Wooddall Crowder (Charles), sister-in-law, Cathy Harwood, and nieces and nephews, Chris Harwood, Leslie Johnson (Johnny), Lydia Katrin, Mikayla and Connor Harwood, and Reese and Carly Johnson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Visiting Nurse Health System at 5775 Glenridge Drive, Ste E200, Atlanta, GA 30328. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 pm on Saturday at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, 2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur, GA 30033. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
