James E. Anthony Jr. M.D. passed away Aug. 16, 09. Born May 23, 1923 in Centerville, Md. Dr. Anthony graduated with honors from Washington College and the University of Maryland Medical School. While an intern at Jefferson Hospital in Roanoke, VA, he met and married a young nurse, Beatrice Hodges. After three of his five children were born, he distressed his family by volunteering to serve in the Korean War. Captain Anthony was awarded the bronze star for rescuing a wounded soldier behind the lines. He was honorably discharged with the rank of major. Looking for a place to start his practice, he fell in love with Atlanta in the spring of 1956. During his career he served as chief of surgery at DeKalb General Hospital, was president of the DeKalb Medical Society, and was on the board of medical examiners and president of the board. He also helped develop Georgia’s nationally-known disabled doctors program. Married twice, he is survived by his wife, Helen; his children, Reid, Clay, Judy, Richard, Ruth Anna; and our mother, Bea. He was our Major Dad, and he will be missed. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 19, Rev. Kelly Moore officiating. Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
