Dr. James Stephen Buckler, 68, of Johns Creek, beloved son, husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Monday, January 8, 2018. Born August 3, 1949, in Atlanta, GA, he was the son of Rosamond Harmon Buckler and the late Alonzo Magruder Buckler, Jr.
Steve was proud to have grown up in Avondale Estates and was a 1967 graduate of Avondale High School. From there, he continued his education at Georgia Southern University on a basketball scholarship, where he was the seventh all-time leading scorer. While attending GSU, he was a founding member of the Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity and served as President for both his Junior and Senior years. During the summer of 1970, Steve married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Parham, from Decatur. Upon graduating from GSU in 1971, Steve taught math at Southwest DeKalb High School and coached JV and Varsity basketball for one year. In 1972, Steve’s path took him to Augusta, where he attended Dental School at the Medical College of Georgia. When he graduated in 1975, Steve and Nancy moved back home to Atlanta, where Steve started his dental practice that same year. During his dental career, he held membership in the America Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association, and is a past president of the DeKalb Dental Study Club. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Steve enjoyed officiating Georgia high school football and did so for 25 years. During this time, he also joined the Atlanta Athletic Club, where he continued to pursue his passions for basketball and golf, and Peachtree Corners Baptist Church, where he has been a member for 32 years. Steve and Nancy raised their three children in Peachtree Corners. While they attended Marist High School, Steve coached AAU basketball teams. Throughout his life, Steve has loved the Lord, his family, sports, and his patients.
In addition to his mother, Rosamond, Steve is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nancy Parham Buckler; son, Bradley Stephen Buckler, his wife, Britt, and their daughters Alli Lane Buckler and Boots Buckler; son Blake Thomas Buckler, his wife, Lydia, and their son Benjamin Buckler; daughter, Stephanie Buckler Brosseau, her husband, Phil, and their sons Philip Brosseau, Stephen Parker Brosseau, Knox Brosseau, and Jackson Brosseau; brother, Bobby Buckler, his wife, Jane; brother, Lon Buckler, III; brother-in-law, Sam Adams; nieces, nephews, and many more loving family and friends.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Bonnie Buckler Adams.
The family will receive friends from 4 - 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 10, at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home. A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 11, at Peachtree Corners Baptist Church, Peachtree Corners.
