Dr. John William Fristoe, Jr.

Dr. John William Fristoe, Jr., age 92, of Decatur, GA died December 5, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Conner Fristoe and four children, Katherine Fristoe Tronco and husband, Joe of Charlotte, NC, John William Fristoe, III, of Athens, GA, Elizabeth Fristoe Kibler and husband, Bud, of Columbia, SC and Thomas Conner Fristoe and wife, Margaret of Crossett, AR. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. "Billy" was born in Mayfield, KY, October 23, 1919, the third child of Ruby Bazzell Fristoe and John William Fristoe, Sr. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Martha Elizabeth Fristoe and Mary Ann Fristoe Taylor. He attended Columbia Military Academy and graduated from Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt Medical School, where he was the president of his senior class. He served in the United States Army for two years, attaining the rank of captain. He enjoyed collecting pocket knives and guns and was known for his quick wit. Dr. Fristoe practiced medicine in the field of obstetrics and gynecology in Jackson, MS, Atlanta and Decatur. He delivered the first baby at DeKalb General Hospital. He also practiced at the VA Hospital for 13 years as a member of the psychiatric staff treating patients with substance abuse. He was a friend of Bill W. for 47 years. Dr. Fristoe's funeral will be Saturday, December 10th at 11:00 A.M in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, 2773 North Decatur Rd., Decatur. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dr. Fristoe's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, 370 7th Avenue, 3rd.
