Dr. Miriam Francis Smith, 73, of Decatur, passed away October 29, 2008. Dr. Smith, known to her friends as Penny, was an outstanding psychiatrist who took the time not only to understand the nature of disease but also to explore the intricacies of the human spirit. She had many tools that she used to help people find wholeness, but her greatest gift and the source of her healing power was grounded in her acceptance of every single person as a child of God, worthy of her time, and a recipient of her love. Born April 1, 1935, Penny was the daughter of the late Rev. William Theodore Smith Sr. and Lula Claire Harris Smith. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Rev. W. Theodore Smith Jr. and James M. Smith Sr. She is survived by her nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 12:30 PM at All Saints Episcopal Church with the Rev. Geoffrey Hoare officiating. The Rev. Hugh Grant and The Rev. Dr. Betty Castellani will also be speaking. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cancer Survivors Fund, DeKalb Medical Center, 2701 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, GA, 30033.
