Dr. Robert H. (Tim) Almeroth, Jr.

Dr. Robert H. "Tim" Almeroth, Jr., 73, of Avondale Estates died Friday, February 3, 2012. Dr. Almeroth was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Hialeah, Florida, where he graduated from Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High School in Miami. After high school, Dr. Almeroth began a career in the U.S. Navy in aviation electronics. The Navy squadron to which he was assigned received the Top Gun Award in 1959. Dr. Almeroth was honorably discharged in 1960, and he went to work for IBM in computer systems development and installation. He helped develop and install the communication terminal and computer airline reservation systems for Delta Air Lines in Atlanta, as well as the first application of video and computers with the C-5A Galaxy aircraft project at Lockheed. In 1967, Dr. Almeroth accepted a position with The Coca-Cola Company in management information systems where he became the manager of technical consulting for corporate information services. In 1974, Dr. Almeroth was accepted to Emory University's School of Medicine. Upon his graduation from medical school, he completed an internship in surgery and general medicine, and began his practice in family medicine at the Montreal Medical Center in Tucker. Dr. Almeroth was the Chief of the Department of Family Practice at DeKalb Medical Center from 1984-86, and he served as Chief of Staff from 1990-92. Dr. Almeroth retired in 1998, but he returned to the practice of medicine on a part-time basis in 2000, and he fully retired in July of last year. Dr. Almeroth was an avid sailor, and he and his wife lived at Lake Hartwell from 1998-2008. Dr. Almeroth was also an accomplished drummer who was actively involved in musical groups such as the Peachtree Symphonic Winds, the Peachtree Band of Jazz, Crosstown Jazz, The Seed & Feed Marching Abominable Band, The Nostalgics, and Night Train. He was also a member of the orchestra for regular show productions at Holy Cross Catholic Church, St. Thomas More Catholic Church and the Cathedral of Christ the King. Dr. Almeroth served on the Board of Trustees for the King's Bridge Retirement Center. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nellie K. Almeroth; son, Kevin T. Almeroth (Robert A. Vargas) of Savannah; daughter, Andrea Almeroth Smith of Buford; granddaughter, Lindsey Nicole Ong (Thuan); grandsons, Stephen Kyle Smith, Robert Kevin Smith and Anthony LeRoy Dye; brothers, Peter J. Almeroth, Dr. Richard D. Almeroth (Connie), and James A. Almeroth (Marian); sister, Deborah M. Lamon (David); and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Dr. Almeroth's life is planned for Saturday, February 18, at 1:00 p.m. at The Pavilion at King's Bridge, 3055 Briarcliff Road, N.E., Atlanta. A reception and visitation will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Charles B. Eberhart DeKalb Medical Cancer Center.
