Thomas P. Scott, Jr. of Atlanta died peacefully at home on Wednesday July 6, 2016. He was born in Whitmire, SC on June 20, 1926 to Annie Mae Donnan Scott and Thomas P. Scott. He graduated in 1943 from Whitmire High School as valedictorian of his class and then served in the US Navy from 1944-1946. After World War II, he attended Emory University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1948. He graduated from Emory School of Medicine in 1952 and served an internship in pediatrics at Grady Hospital. He then served as chief pediatric resident at the University of Arkansas Children's Hospital. In 1955-56 he was house physician at University of Sheffield in England. He practiced pediatrics in East Point for 37 years, after which he was a medical consultant to the disability program of social security for 16 years, retiring in 2008.
In 1955 he married Jane Patterson Seward of Altoona, PA, and they had three children: Laurie Elizabeth Scott Bass (Travis), who died of cancer in 2010; Thomas P. Scott, III (Lalla Shishkevish) of Ann Arbor, MI; and David R. Scott (Tracie Farmer) of Smoke Rise. He is survived by his sons and their wives, his son-in-law Travis Bass, 6 grandchildren (Ed Bass, Elizabeth Bass Spain, Sasha Scott, Margaret Scott, William Scott, and Patrick Scott); and 6 great grandchildren (Edie, Travis and Scott Bass; Will, Laurie and Emma Kate Spain). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 9th at 4 pm in the Chapel at Decatur First United Methodist Church, 1523 Church Street, Decatur, GA 30030. Interment will be at Mt. Tabor Methodist Church Cemetery in Whitmire, SC. Visitation will be Friday, July 8th from 6 – 8 pm at A.S. Turner & Sons, 2773 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, GA 30033.
