E. Joe Summers passed away December 8, 2007 after a long illness of Parkinson's Disease. He was a WWII veteran serving in China, Burma and India. His 88 years included life membership in the Optimist International. He was an avid golfer and longtime member of Druid Hills Golf Club. In 1939 he founded Joe Summers Roofing Company. Mr. Summers, a lifelong Atlantan, was preceded in death by his son, Kent Summers and his brother, Jack Summers. He is survived by his wife, Lalus Summers and two daughters and sons-in-law, Bob and Jane Going, Diane and Finley Clarke and daughter-in-law, Elaine Summers. Eight grandchildren and families include, Mike & Stephanie Vanderpool, Brian & Kelley Bick, Wright & Briana Summers, Lindsey Elliott, Leslie Elliott, Finley and Vani Clarke, Henry Clarke and Summers Clarke. Six great grandchildren include Brittany and Stephen Vanderpool, Ian Brandon and Alexis Bick and Jacob Summers. Mr. Summers is also survived by Doris Whitener, former wife and mother of their three children. A memorial service for Mr. Summers will be at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah, 465 Clairemont Ave at Erie, Decatur, Georgia on Tuesday, December 11 at 2:00P.M. A gathering will take place at the church following the service.
