Earl Wimberly Burnette, Jr.

Earl W. Burnette, Jr., age 96 of Stone Mountain, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents Earl W. Burnette, Sr. and Evelyn Schenck, his wives Madge and Carolyn, and his sister Evelyn.

He is survived by his children Terri Burnette, Barry (Reida) Burnette, Gregory (Jennifer) Burnette, Patrick Burnette, and a grandson Chandler Burnette. He is also survived by nieces and great nieces and nephews.

Earl was born in Bibb County, Georgia and as a young boy moved to Thomaston, Georgia where he attended grammar school and high school. Before his 18th birthday, Earl went to the U.S. Navy recruiting office to enlist in the Navy. In 1944, he was assigned to the USS Baker, a Destroyer Escort as a Sonarman Second Class.

After serving in the Navy, he was a salesman for various corrugated box manufacturers during his career. While working in Macon, he met Madge whom he married in 1953 and had four children. Earl, Madge and three children moved to Decatur, Georgia in 1964. A few years later, a third son was born. He and the family joined Belvedere United Methodist Church in 1964 and was a member until the church closed in 2011. In 1990, Earl was married to Carolyn until her death in 2012. In 2012, he joined Mountain Park United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held Monday, May 23, 2022 at 11:00 am at Mountain Park United Methodist Church, 1405 Rockbridge Road, SW, Stone Mountain, GA 30087.
