Edward H. Cass died on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at age 84 in Atlanta, GA. He was a native of Cleveland, Ohio, son of Robert Cass and Caroline Pickands Cass. He graduated from University School and Harvard University (Class of 1951).
Mr. Cass served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. After his service he returned to Cleveland and married Susanne Balkwill in 1954, at St. Paul's Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Over the course of his career he worked for a number Cleveland companies in the manufacturing sector.
Mr. Cass was a lifelong railroad enthusiast, an accomplished historian, and author. In the late 1940s he visited and photographed some of America's last
surviving narrow gauge railroad lines. He became a prolific contributor of articles including photographs, models and plans to specialist model railroading magazines. Mr. Cass authored Hidden Treasures: The Story of the Ohio River and Western Railway (1997). In 2012, Mr. Cass moved with his wife to his retirement home at the foot of Stone Mountain, Georgia. He cherished his friends at the Park Springs Retirement Community.
Mr. Cass is survived by his beloved wife and companion of 59 years, Susanne Cass, daughter Cyndi Cass-Skowronek and son-in-law Larry Skowronek of Decatur GA, son James P. Cass of Denver CO, sister Caroline Caswell of Boston, MA and grandchildren, Isabella, Nicholas, Harriet and Julia. The family wishes to thank treasured caregiver Denise Lewison.
Memorial services will be held in Stone Mountain, Georgia at Park Springs and in Cleveland Heights, Ohio on Thursday, July 17, at 3:00 pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cleveland Foundation (http://www.clevelandfoundation.org/) or the Decatur Education Foundation (http://decatureducationfoundation.org/).
