Mr. Edwin Luther McElhannon of Stone Mountain died Tuesday, July 21, 2009. A native of Walton County, Mr. McElhannon was a World War II U. S. Navy veteran with campaigns in the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Pacific. He was a carpet and fine rug salesman with Rich’s Department Store for over 30 years. Mr. McElhannon was a longtime member of Avondale Estates First Baptist Church and the Steadfast Men’s Sunday School Class. Mr. McElhannon was especially fond of the natural environment and a friend of all animals. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Uclete Thurmon McElhannon; daughter, Sandra M. Griffin of Starr, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Jan McElhannon of Marietta; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; sisters, Grace Wilson of Atlanta, Jeanette Sorrow of Atlanta; and brother, Lamar McElhannon of Rome. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons at 11 a.m. Friday, July 24th, Rev. Mark Green and Mr. Tommy Lankford officiating. The Steadfast Men’s Sunday School Class will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. Burial will follow in the Apple Valley Cemetery, Commerce, GA at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
