Egbert Washington Estes, 96, died Tuesday, June 14, 201, at his home in Homer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Eugenia Smith Estes, son-in-law, Mitch Whitfield, brother, David Estes and sister, Evelyn Bullard. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he was the son of Egbert Washington Estes, Sr. and Lena Bell Estes. Mr. Estes was a member of Decatur First United Methodist Church, Benevolent Order of Elks, the American Legion and was a United States Army veteran, serving his country in WWII. He was retired from Peerless Construction Co. He was an avid golfer until the age of 91. Survivors include his daughter, Ellen Whitfield of Homer; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Keith Campbell of Homer; grandchildren, Wes and Patty Whitfield, Ben Whitfield, Kate and Josh Beasley, Kyle Campbell, Kerri and Scott Henley and six great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, at 12 Noon June 17, at the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons with Bishop Bevel Jones and Rev. Jim McLendon officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Decatur First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 12:00 Noon at A. S. Turner & Sons.
