Eleanor Harper Grimes died in Stone Mountain, Georgia, on August 23, 2014. Mrs. Grimes was born in 1920 in Birmingham, Alabama, to Benjamin Gerald Harper and Pearl Dilworth Harper. She lived in Atlanta most of her life, primarily in the Decatur and Druid Hills areas and was a graduate of Decatur Girls High School. Her work experience includes two years as head bookkeeper for the Genuine Parts Company in Macon, Georgia; and fifteen years at Safeco Insurance Company in Atlanta as a bookkeeper, auditor, and supervisor of the auditing department. Mrs. Grimes was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Decatur, where she was a deacon, president of the J.O.Y. Sunday School Class, and served in many other leadership roles. Mrs. Grimes was president of Lullwater Garden Club and was honored as a Life Member of Lullwater Garden Club, a Life Member of The Garden Club of Georgia, and a Life Member of The National Garden Club. She also served as president of Druid Hills Civitan Club. She was a talented china painter and a gracious hostess. Mrs. Grimes was a loving and beloved wife, mother, step-mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her later years were spent in the Park Springs Retirement Community, where she enjoyed the company of many friends and neighbors. Mrs. Grimes was pre-deceased by her first husband, Franklin Lamar Mowell in 1964; and by her second husband, Dr.William H. Grimes, Jr. in 2010. Also pre-deceasing Mrs. Grimes were her sisters, Helen Harper Merriam and Marian Harper Gary; her brother Ben G. Harper, Jr.; and her son-in-law, Roger B. Hysmith. Mrs. Grimes is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann and John Culpepper; daughter, Brenda Mowell Hysmith; grandchildren Beth and Derek Smith, John and Cherie Hysmith, Michael M. Neal, Jr., and Susan Schultea; brother and sister-in-law, John and Madge Harper; sisters-in-law Helen Mowell Robbins, Ruth Mowell Brooks, and Wattie Grimes Hays; and brothers-in-law Thomas H. Morton, Sr. and Marvin A. Acree, Jr. Her great-grandchildren are Bryan and Jordan Schultea, Lauren Smith, and Justin and Olivia Hysmith. Step-children are Billy and Claire Grimes, Rosalind and George Simpson, John and Jean Grimes, Tom and Nancy Grimes, and Mary and David Galloway. Fourteen step-grandchildren and eight great step-grandchildren survive Mrs. Grimes. She will be missed by an extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Memorial contributions may be made to Women's Ministries Fund, First Baptist Church of Decatur, 308 Clairemont Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030, or to a charity of your choice. A memorial service is planned for Thursday, August 28, at 2:00 p.m. at A.S. Turner and Son Funeral Home in Decatur, with The Rev. Dr. Peter Rhea Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Decatur Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday at 1:00 p.m., prior to the memorial service at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
