Eleanor Theo Hohaus Bain

October 26, 1925 — January 22, 2010

Mrs. Eleanor (Ellie) Hohaus Bain, 84, of Atlanta passed away on Friday, January 22, 2010.  She was born Eleanor Theo Hohaus on October 26, 1925 in Springfield, OH to Verne Theodore Hohaus and Theo Gorr. Ellie grew up in the Midwest, the daughter of a mechanical engineer, moving often among cities from Hollywood, CA to Madison, WI with her family.  She graduated from Winona Senior High School in Winona, WI and from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in nursing, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.  She met her husband, James A. Bain, the love of her life at the University of Wisconsin, where she learned to drink coffee so she could talk to him as he was waiting on tables working at the dormitory dining room.  They moved to Atlanta in 1953, when her husband took a position with Emory University.  Mrs. Bain taught kindergarten at the Sheridan Road Christian School from 1966 to 1968 and she was a dedicated volunteer at the Emory Gift Shop with the Emory Woman’s Club.  Ellie was an avid Bridge player and a member of the Druid Hills Ladies Golf Association.  She was a collector of a variety of fine Christmas ornaments, Antiques, Teacups and miniatures, which she lavishly gave to all her children.  Gardening was a life long passion.  She enjoyed the wild flowers at the lake and her house plants became of great concern during her final days. Knitting and needle point became a welcome therapy to her as she was recovering from a stroke.  Mrs. Bain will be remembered as a fighter, words such as “give up” were not in her vocabulary.  She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.  She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Bain and is survived by her husband of 62 years, James A. Bain; sons, Peter Bain and his wife Dianne, Andrew Bain and his wife Sarah; grandsons, Matthew and Harrison Bain; one great grandson, JJ Bain and twin great grandchildren on the way.  Memorial services will be held Wednesday, January 27 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons with Rev. Tom Pipkin officiating.  In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston for Indigent Patients or Pediatric Oncology, 1687 Tullie Circle, Atlanta, GA  30329, ATTN:  Gift Processing.  The family will receive friends following the service on Wednesday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
