Elijah Francis Moore, Jr.

Elijah Francis Moore, Jr. (Lige Moore) died in Atlanta on May 15, 2020. He was 92 years old. Lige was born in South Georgia. Part of his early schooling was in the two-room rural school house known as Possum Trot. After graduation from Lanier High School in Macon, the army sent him to North Georgia College in Dahlonega. He subsequently served in the United States Army Air Corp in Korea just prior to the outbreak of war there. Upon returning from Korea he attended Mercer University and then transferred to Duke University where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Economics. Lige went on to Harvard University where he earned his MBA. He married his wife of 69 years, Ena, in 1951. They moved to Decatur, GA in 1952 where he began a long career at Trust Company of Georgia. During his career there, he was Group Vice President responsible for Credit Services, and he was in charge of recruiting and training commercial banking officers. He retired from Trust Company in 1988.

Lige and Ena joined North Decatur Methodist Church in 1952. They remained members there for all their years together. They have four children: Susan, Robert, David, and Rebecca. He was a dad who played with his children, read to them, prayed with them, took them on trips across the country, went to church with them, and attended all their many performances and sports events. Lige is survived by his wife, Ena, his four children, nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Lige was very active in his community. He served as treasurer for the Medlock Little League Association, President of the Druid Hill High School Sports Activities Club, President of the Druid Hills Kiwanis Club, and a state Lt. Governor in Kiwanis. Lige was President of the Druid Hills Civic Association and helped lead the fight to stop the Stone Mountain Freeway from coming through the historic Druid Hills neighborhood and Olmsted Park. He served as the President for Atlanta Habitat for Humanity in its fledgling years.

Lige lived out his call to serve God through service in his local church and by leading weekly prayer meetings at Trust Company of Georgia. He also held many volunteer positions of service in the North Georgia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church: Executive Director of the Georgia United Methodist Foundation, Director of the Housing and Homeless Council, Board Chairperson for Camp Glisson, Board Chairperson for Murphy-Harpst Children’s Centers, Chairperson of the Conference Standing Rules Committee, member of the Conference Board of Pensions, and several other positions. His love for the Lord and his legacy of service have blessed and inspired multitudes of persons over the years.

Lige Moore was a loving husband, wonderful father, giving grandfather, servant of the Lord. He will be missed on earth, but we entrust him into the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
