Elisabeth Acree Snelling, 92, of Madison, AL, formerly of Decatur, GA, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at Valley View Nursing Home in Madison, AL. She was born July 15, 1922, in Norwood, GA. Mrs. Snelling was raised in Sparta, Madison, and Augusta, GA, where she graduated from Tubman Girls' High School in 1940. She received a B.A. degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia in 1948. Mrs. Snelling lived most of her adult life in Decatur. She was a member of Decatur Presbyterian Church and the Heaton Park Garden Club, and served as second-vice president of the Northwest Georgia Girl Scout Council, president of the Medlock Elementary School PTA, and president of the Children's Civic Theater of Atlanta. She was proudest of writing the DeKalb Garden Club Federation newsletter, which won state and national awards. Mrs. Snelling was employed for 16 years at Emory University, retiring in 1987 as administrative coordinator of the Faculty Staff Clinic. Mrs. Snelling was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Snelling III; parents, H. Grady and Ida Scruggs Acree; and sister, Helen Acree Veal, all of Decatur. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Snelling (Robert) DeFurio of Madison, AL; and grandsons, David DeFurio of Madison, AL, and Roger (Samantha) DeFurio of Pittsburgh, PA. Her funeral will be held Sunday, October 12th, at 3:00PM in the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons with interment to follow in Decatur Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:00 until service time at A.S. Turner and Sons, 2773 N. Decatur Rd; Decatur, GA 30033.
