Elisabeth (Lib) Mcallister Courtenay

October 1, 1927 — February 26, 2011

Elisabeth McAllister Courtenay, "Lib", beloved Mom, Grandmother, and friend, went to Heaven on Saturday, February 26, 2011. Our Mom was born Oct. 1, 1927 and grew up in Chattanooga, TN. She graduated from Wheaton College in 1949. Mom married her high school sweetheart, Joseph Kenneth "Ken" Courtenay in July 1950 and they settled in Atlanta. Mom taught elementary school for several years in Forest Park and Dad worked for Southern Airways. Because Dad worked for the airlines, they were able to take many fun trips all over the world. They were married 43 wonderful years and raised 3 children. Mom was predeceased by Dad in 1993 and by her son, Scott, in l997. Mom was an extremely talented woman. She did beautiful handwork and enjoyed being in the Druid Hills' Stitch-In. Many friends and family members have received beautiful handmade gifts from Mom and they are special treasures. Mom was outgoing and energetic and had many close friends. She loved going on walking adventures with her friends in the Road Runners. She took several classes at the John C. Campbell Folk School and learned how to cane chairs, make baskets and play the dulcimer. One of her favorite things to do was to have lunch with her Weigelia Road buddies – a monthly occurrence for over 40 years. She attended Oak Grove Methodist Church and was in the Graydon Hall Sunday School Class. She is survived by her son, Ken ( Karen) Courtenay of Gainesville, GA, her daughter, Diane ( Bobby) Saville of Norcross and her five grandsons Casey ( Brooke) Courtenay, Chris Courtenay, Carson, David and Brandon Saville, who loved her dearly. Our Mom was a most special lady and those who had the privilege of knowing her will miss her greatly. Services to honor the life of Lib Courtenay will be held at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home at 2773 N. Decatur Road, Decatur at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 1st. Visitation will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park in Chattanooga, TN. The body was cremated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Samaritan's Purse (www.samaritanspurse.org) or the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (http://billygraham.org).
