Elizabeth Allen Layburn

Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) Delphine Layburn of Atlanta died Tuesday, December 15, 2009. She was born on May 31, 1925 in Dunellen, NJ to the late William and Alice Allen. She was one of seven children.  Betty became a registered nurse, graduating from the Muhlenberg Hospital School of Nursing in Plainfield, NJ. She was registered to practice in New Jersey, California and Georgia. She then enlisted in the U. S. Cadet Nurse Corps in March 1944. Betty left nursing practice when her first child was born and became a “stay at home” mom. Once her children were grown, she began practice at St. Joseph’s Hospital in downtown Atlanta. Later, Betty was an auxiliary member at Egleston’s Children’s Hospital. She was preceded in death by her first son, William. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, William (Bill); daughter, Barbara Hollingsworth and her husband Hugh of Jasper; son, Mark Layburn of Decatur; grandchildren, Jason Mann and wife Melanie of Oxford; Travis Mann and wife Mahaley of Moody, AL; great grandchildren, Trevor Mann, Trey Mann, Kaylee and Kathryn Mann, all of Moody, AL; brother, Alfred Allen and Dawn of Citrus Springs, FL; and a number of nieces and nephews. A Funeral   Mass will be celebrated Friday, December 18 at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Crossroads Community Ministry at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 435 Peachtree St., Atlanta, GA 30308-3228. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.  with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, December 17th  at A. S. Turner & Sons.
