Elizabeth (Betty) Walker was passionate about the Lord, her family, and life. Whether spending time with her grandchildren, cooking a famous Southern "Sunday dinner" or conquering a five-mile run, Betty brought joy to her surroundings. She passed into the Lord's arms on Thursday, December 28, 2017.
Born at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta to Herman and Elizabeth Campbell, she was known affectionately as "Sissy" to her loving family. Betty had a heart for others, evidenced by her successful nursing career. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Medical College of Georgia, and Master of Nursing from Emory University. Betty worked many years at Egleston Hospital, and finished her nursing career as Director of Health Services and one of the original employees at the Marcus Autism Center. Along the way, she mentored many future nurses as an instructor at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing.
In 1958, she married M. Lawrence (Larry) Walker, also of Decatur. The couple is most proud of their nearly 60-year successful marriage, their three sons, and seven grandchildren. She was a long-time member and very involved at First Baptist Atlanta, where she served alongside her husband, chairman of the deacons. She also especially enjoyed her community service work with the Junior League of DeKalb County.
She is survived by her husband Lawrence; a brother, Jim Campbell (Joanne) of Monroe and sister Linda Hull (Brad) of Statham; her children, Steven L. Walker (Karen), Scott C. Walker (Susan), David J. Walker (Susan); grandchildren, Elizabeth Walker, Anna Walker, Benjamin Walker, John Walker, Nancy Kate Walker, Sallie Walker and Reese Walker. Her brother, Joseph Herman Campbell, Jr., passed away in 2013.
The family would also like to thank the team at Atlanta Home Care Partners, especially Rosetta Fillmore and Tanya Story, for their tireless attention.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 am, Monday, January 1, 2018 at First Baptist Church of Atlanta. Dr. Charles Stanley and Dr. Anthony George will officiate. Visitation is at the church from 10 am to 11 am. Afterwards, a private family burial will be held at Decatur City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, well-wishers are asked to send contributions to In Touch Ministries and First Baptist Church of Atlanta.
