Elizabeth Furlow Brown, 89, DeKalb educator and supporter of the arts, died October 11, 2007. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Georgia natives, Emmie Pennington and Calvin E. Furlow. She graduated from Girls' High School in Atlanta and from Agnes Scott College, with honors, in 1939. In 1939, she married Robert W. Brown of Atlanta. Before his death in 2005, the couple had celebrated 65 years of marriage. Mrs. Brown taught history, geography and reading at Medlock School in DeKalb County for 28 years. She received numerous honors at Medlock and was invited to join the honorary organization for educators, Delta Kappa Gamma. Mrs. Brown earned advanced degrees in education from Georgia State University in 1971 and 1972. When they retired in 1983, Mr. and Mrs. Brown became active participants in Emory's Senior University, where they served as officers and committee chairs. They were among the founders of Senior University of Greater Atlanta. They traveled throughout North America and to four other continents. Mr. and Mrs. Brown supported the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the High Museum of Art. They were active members of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Tucker. Mrs. Brown was a regular donor to her alma mater, Agnes Scott College, and to many charities. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Immediate survivors include her children and their spouses: Steve and Karen Brown, Patricia and Randy Finch and Nancy Brown; brother, Edward P. Furlow; and grandchildren, Roger Brown, Jason Page and David Cureton. Her beloved Sheltie (Robbie) now resides with her daughter, Patricia. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 pm at A.S. Turner and Sons, on Friday, October 12th. Funeral service will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons at 12 Noon Saturday, October 13th, Dr. Dave Kivett officiating. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Pennington Methodist Church Cemetery. Those wishing to contribute to a charity in Mrs. Brown's memory may consider Sheltie Rescue of Georgia at 770-926-2001.
