Elizabeth Hawkins

March 20, 1916 — September 17, 2013

Elizabeth "Betty" Walton Hawkins, 97, of Clarkston, GA died on September 17, 2013. She was the wife of the late Reginald Robert Hawkins (her husband of 64 years) and the daughter of Daniel Day Walton and Hulda Parton Walton. She was a graduate of Barnard College ('37) and she earned a Masters Degree from Columbia University Teacher's College in Speech ('39). Betty taught Speech at Pembroke College and later at Millstone Township Elementary School. She left her position at Pembroke to become an Administrative Assistant at the New York Public Library where she met Reginald. They married in 1945 and began their family in White Plains, NY. At that time she also partnered with her husband on writing books on various subjects including architecture and a home improvement series. In 1959 Betty and her husband moved to a farm in Millstone, New Jersey. There they continued to write, tried their hand at manufacturing a board game - Randoo. They operated two greenhouses, grew many crops including strawberries and melons and had many devoted customers. Betty and her husband left the farm in 1983 and moved to Clarkston, Georgia. Betty enjoyed her grandchildren and her interests included politics, investing and nutrition. She moved to Arbor Terrace Assisted Living in Decatur, Georgia in 2012. At Arbor Terrace she loved the garden, music program and she had many loving caregivers. She was known for her sweetness and spirit. She is survived by five children: Daniel Walton Hawkins of Annapolis, MD, Elizabeth H. Jewett (Mark Jewett) of Randolph, VT, Priscilla H. Burns (the late Thomas Burns) of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, Phyllis Hawkins (Mark Seaman) of Atlanta GA and Alice Hawkins (Jeffrey Wiseman) of Gardiner, NY as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren. A service will be held on Saturday September, 21 at 4:00 pm, (receiving guests from 3:30pm) at A.S. Turner & Sons funeral home, 2773 North Decatur Rd. Decatur, GA. The family requests that contributions be made to the charity of the givers choice in lieu of flowers.
