Virginia Newsome Vaughan, 67 of Decatur, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. An active community volunteer and supporter, Virginia touched many lives throughout her career as a social worker in and around the Decatur area. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Social Science from Florida State University and a Master of Social Work degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Virginia was Director of the Atlanta Women's Community Kitchen and founding Executive Director of the DeKalb Rape Crisis Center as well as the part-time Member Services Coordinator at Side by Side Brain Injury Clubhouse in Stone Mountain, GA at the time of her death. Mrs. Vaughan was a proud of her Decatur community and her Decatur First United Methodist Church family and actively volunteered for book festivals and vacation bible school even in her last years. Virginia was predeceased by her son, David, and survived by her husband of 42 years, Walter, and her daughter, Becky. The family will receive friends at A.S. Turner and Sons in Decatur on Sunday, November 17, 2013 from 2:00-5:00 PM, and her funeral service will be at Decatur First United Methodist Church on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 2:00 PM. With Dr. Katy Hinman officiating. Interment will take place in Decatur Cemetery at 4:00 PM Monday as well.
