Ellen Raymer

September 21, 1930 — August 8, 2021

Ellen was born September 21, 1930, in Newark, New Jersey. Her parents were Herbert P. Greenwood and Frances Corson Greenwood. They lived in Maplewood, just west of Newark. Ellen graduated from Columbia High School in 1948. She then attended Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, whence she graduated in 1952 with a B.A. in economics. From 1952 to 1957, Ellen worked for the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark.

In 1957, Ellen Greenwood married Clifford Raymer from Benton Harbor, Michigan. They immediately moved to Philadelphia and had two children, Jack and Kenneth. In 1964 they moved to Michigan and then in 1965 they moved to Atlanta as Clifford’s job situation kept changing. They settled in East Point, where they built a house and lived until 1993. They were members of Headland Heights United Methodist Church, and the East Point First United Methodist Church. Jack and Kenneth grew up in that house and they each graduated from Briarwood High School.

In 1993 Ellen and Cliff moved to a new house in Marietta, where they lived until 2017. Clifford had begun developing senile dementia, and by 2017 had to move to assisted living memory care in Marietta. Ellen also moved with him to the assisted living facility, where she could closely look after him and make sure he got the care he needed. Clifford passed away in October 2019 and was buried in the family plot in Michigan. Ellen continued to live at the assisted living facility but suffered two bouts of bronchitis and pneumonia that winter, which left her weaker and in need of more help from her family. When the pandemic struck in March 2020, she moved out of that assisted living facility and into the home of her son Jack, in Tucker. Ellen was always very organized and analytical; she liked everything to be neat and tidy. She loved to watch the Braves and the Falcons.

She is pre-deceased by her husband, Clifford. She is survived by her two sons Jack Raymer (wife Ginnie Ferrell) and Kenneth Raymer. Interment and a brief graveside service are scheduled for Tuesday, August 17, at Crystal Springs Cemetery, Benton Harbor, Michigan. A memorial service in Atlanta is scheduled for Saturday, August 21, at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church.
