VILLAR, Emma –
Emma Aurelia Herrera Villar passed away Monday, September 20, 2010 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. She was born July 8, 1925 in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. She attended University of Havana and graduated at the top of her class with a PhD in Chemistry. Dr. Villar fled Castro's Cuba and came to the United States in 1962 with her son, Alfredo, and was joined later by her husband, Dr. Gustavo Villar. Both Drs. Villar soon found work at Westminster Schools in Atlanta, Georgia. Emma was a favorite math teacher and taught there until her retirement in 1995. She was a long time member of the Atlanta Cuban Club and will be remembered for her enthusiasm for dominoes. She was a great traveler and spent many summers in Europe. An avid Atlanta Braves fan she could go into great detail about the team's history and statistics. She rarely missed a game. In later years she began to write poetry and to the delight of her friends completed a number of volumes of poems. She spent her last years enjoying life in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with her cousin Dr. Ovidio Manalich and his wife Dr. Maria Antonia Duyos and made many friends there. She is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years and her six brothers and sisters. She leaves behind her son Alfredo Villar and his wife Anita Villar. A crypt side service will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at Floral Hills Memory Garden in Tucker, GA. Visitation will be held Friday September 24, from 6-8 PM at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, GA.
