Erma Irene Jones Hoopes

October 9, 1919 — July 16, 2016

Erma Irene Hoopes went to be with her Savior on Saturday, July 16th, 2016 in Columbus, GA. She was born on October 9, 1919 on a dairy and grain farm south of Damascus, Ohio, the the fourth of five children. As a child, she was greatly influenced by her parents' strong Christian Faith and unwavering work ethic. She learned the qualities of service to others and generosity as they helped their neighbors with food through the years of the Great Depression. She graduated Goshen High School as an honor student and member of the varsity basketball team.
She married Clarence Lea Hoopes on March 17, 1944 and in their fifty-five yeards of marriage they had two children, Bruce (Robyn) and Margery (John); four grandchildren: Jennifer (Brian), Katherine (Gregg), Evan (Jean Marie), Cameron and six great grandchildren: John, Madeline, Paige, Grace, Luke, Micah.
A lifelong educator, Erma first attended Kent State University and earned degrees from Stetson University (BA) and Georgia State University (MEd.) and taught elementary school in Ohio, Florida and Georgia for thirty-seven years. In retirement, she remained active in Alpha Delta Kappa educators sorority, LaVista Lionesses Club and in Presbyterian Women of the Church, where she held several significant leadership positions over the course of forty-five years. Her interests included reading, traveling, visiting with her grandchildren and she was an avid fan of Braves baseball.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lea (1999) and son Bruce (2011). Erma was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. While we will miss her cheerful presence in this life, we rejoice in her heavenly reunion with loved ones in the presence of the Lord.

Her lifetime of Christian witness will be memorialized in a worship service held at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Stone Mountain, GA on Saturday, July 23rd, with burial at Peachtree Memorial Gardens in Norcross, GA.
