Ernest Lunsford, Jr., age 88, died on January 15, 2009. He was born on August 26, 1920 in Atlanta, where he lived his entire life. Ernest graduated from Tech High School and received a B.S. Degree in Psychology from Emory University. He was a veteran of W. W. II where he served in the Army. He participated in the battle for Cassino in Italy and was awarded two purple hearts for his service to our country. Ernest was the founder, owner, and president of Southland Casket Company for 35 years. His true passion was gardening with a keen interest in hybridizing day lilies. Many of his award-winning day lilies were named for his grandchildren. Ernest was a charter member of Smoke Rise Baptist Church, where he was active in service to his church and community. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Ann Chandler Lunsford. Survivors also include sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Elaine Lunsford, Alan and Marilyn Lunsford; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Bill Stanton; 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 18th at 2:00 p.m. at Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain with Dr. Bob Browning and Dr. Truett Gannon officiating. Interment, Melwood Cemetery.
