Ethel Eugenia Colquitt

Ethel Moore Colquitt passed away Saturday, June 8, 2013, at her apartment in Decatur. She was a wonderful wife, mother and Granny to her family and a faithful member of her church. She spent much of her life taking care of members of her family and was always there to offer help to friends and neighbors. She was born July 17, 1916, in then-Pike County, GA, to Horace Cleveland Moore and Mable Cato Moore. She survived her siblings and her husband, Albert Candler Colquitt, whom she married in 1940. She worked as a seamstress at the William Carter Company, and then was a housewife after her only child, Gayle, was born in 1950. She was a Brownie leader, room mother and 4-H camp chaperone and made many school outfits and prom dresses during Gayle's time at home. She was an immaculate housekeeper and enjoyed gardening. Her caramel cakes were always a hit at church bake sales. After her husband died in 1987, she spent summer weekdays in Decatur taking care of her two grandchildren. For most of her life she was a Methodist, first at Prospect Methodist Church in Lamar County, then at Barnesville First United Methodist Church. She volunteered in many capacities at both churches. She spent her last years as a resident of Philip's Tower, a Presbyterian home in Decatur, and attended Decatur First United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Gayle Colquitt White; a granddaughter, Margaret White Evans (Matthew W.) of Atlanta; a grandson, Robert E. Bobby White III of Rockville, MD; great-grandsons Candler Thomas Evans and Bryson Robert Evans; and nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 18, at Greenwood Cemetery in Barnesville, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. the same day at Decatur United Methodist Church.
