Dr. Jo Baker-Henry, 92, born January 8,1923, to William and Ethel Baker, and died peacefully on September 23, 2015. She began her career by receiving her law degree from Atlanta Law School in 1948. She then received a bachelors degree from the University of Georgia, and masters in General Psychology at Emory University in 1960, and doctoral degree in Experimental Psychology from Emory University in 1962. After graduating, she joined the faculty at Georgia Institute of Technology, and spent the following 16 years teaching Psychology at Georgia Tech.
Dr. Baker was given a one year appointment as Assistant to the VP for Academic Affairs at Georgia Tech; she was promoted to Associate VP for Academic Affairs shortly thereafter. She held this position until her retirement in 1993.
Despite her many responsibilities at Georgia Tech, Dr. Baker always made time for the Presidents Scholars. The Presidents Scholarships Program was not the only initiative that she began while at Georgia Tech. Other programs implemented during her tenure were; National Scholarship Weekend, Super Student Weekend ( high school students), K.I.D.S.( Kids Interested in Discovering Science), Superscape and Futurescape for middle and high school students. So the ideas and concepts behind these programs continue in the Georgia Tech research center known as CEISMC (Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing.
She made sure she had a diverse work group, which consisted of both left and right brain people. Her staff would often tease her about her desk, her many rings, shoes, and clothes. She always played right along with the group.
She then began to volunteer at Eastside Medical Center, participated in the choir at church, and was an active member of the " Hi-Lo s" singing group.
