Eugene Calvin Milligan

Mr. Eugene Calvin Milligan of Stone Mountain, Georgia passed away May 11, 2009. He was born February 10, 1923, in Monroe, Georgia, the son of the late James Vester Milligan and Teresa Margaret Ree Ellison Milligan. He volunteered for the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in the Second Beach Battalion. His service included tours of duty in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and the invasion of Normandy. Following his marriage to Viola Eunice Westberg in 1947, he began a career in farming in Nebraska. In 1959, he and his family moved “home” to Georgia and settled in Decatur. He was employed by Johnson Motor Lines, where he worked for almost 20 years until his retirement in 1979. A faithful Christian, Gene was a deacon and an active member of Gresham Park Baptist Church in the 1960s. After moving to Stone Mountain in 1972, he joined and actively supported Lucerne Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon. Gene enjoyed RV camping, traveling, church activities, attending reunions of his Navy battalion, and spending time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Viola, and by two brothers and two sisters. He is survived by two sisters, Sybil Robinson and Betty Jo Robison; his son and daughter-in-law Dennis and April Milligan; his daughter and son-in-law Sandra and David Chambers; his son and daughter-in-law Rodney and Katherine Milligan; his grandchildren, Tyson and his wife Cynthia, Nathaniel, and Elyse Milligan; Megan, Emily, and Kari Chambers, and James and Elizabeth Milligan; and four great-grandchildren, Abigail, Noah, Logan, and Sarah Milligan. He will be remembered by all who knew and loved him as a kind and gentle Christian man with a positive outlook on life. A funeral service will take place Thursday, May 14, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons with interment following at Resthaven Gardens of Memory in Decatur. Rev. Larry Burgess will officiate. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Lucerne Baptist Church Building Fund, 4805 Stone Mountain Hwy., Lilburn,
