Mr. Eugene Daniel "Sam" Guy, Sr., retired Field Director for the American Red Cross, died Saturday, December 4, 2010 at the age of 84. Mr. Guy was longtime resident of Avondale Estates. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy at age 18. Upon the completion of his four year term, he joined the American National Red Cross. During his career with the Red Cross he served the military faithfully during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. During the Korean Conflict he was attached to the 7th Infantry Division to which he was still a supporter including their deployment in the Middle East. While stationed at Yokota AFB in Japan, one of his duties was to provide care packages to American POWs in China. During this period he also signed the ultimate release of custody papers of the POWs from the Chinese to the U. S. Government. He took great pride and will be forever remembered by his family for walking these POW's across the Chinese border. Mr. Guy was passionate about his country and all who served to protect the American way of life. After a long and dedicated career he retired to take care of his wife, the late Dixie Guy. He loved his home, and his many friends, 2 and 4 legged (neighborhood dogs). He was a member and past treasurer of the American Legion Post 66, Avondale Estates. Surviving are his children, Carol Poe, Nancy Lucht, Dan Guy, Jr., Sherri Hunter; sister, Joyce Watts; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
