Evelyn was born May 17, 1926 in Atlanta, Georgia, the fifth daughter of Joe and Etta Rey Bark.
The family of six daughters and one son lived on Clay St. in the Kirkwood area of Atlanta, in the
home that Etta’s father built for them about 1912. The Barts would remain in the home until
1960, when all the children had married and Joe Bart had died. Evelyn graduated from
Commercial High School in 1944 where she was a member of the band playing the oboe, and
the marching band playing the cymbals. She also played the violin and piano.
Following high school she worked as a secretary for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company
where she met John Earl McCabe, jr. He had been a pilot in the Army Air Corp during World
War II, and joined the reserves after the war. John and Evelyn were married February 22, 1946
at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Atlanta.
Following the birth of their son John, they lived in the Oglethorpe Apartments, where they
made several new friends. Due to the proximity to the apartments, John enjoyed flying over the
apartments to wave at Evelyn, while he was on training runs from DeKalb Peachtree Airport.
About 1950 John and Evelyn moved to 250 Barbara Drive, Decatur, where they purchased a
small post war home in a neighborhood full of veterans. The location was perfect for young
families, including the Herrings, Painters, Peabodys, Gimsons, Wallaces, Johnsons, Huffs,
Breedloves, Harrises, and Evans. Many of these neighbors would become lifelong friends. The
neighborhood was a hub for trikes, bikes, roller skates, bridge playing, and socializing. The
perfect place for young adults and growing children.
About 1952 John McCabe jr. and his parents, John sr. and Maude, started McCabe’s Business
Service. In June 1959 John, Evelyn, Johnny, Teri and Lane moved to Council Bluff Drive to a
larger home. Following the death of John sr. in 1960, Evelyn began helping out at the office.
She was a part time employee until Teri and Lane were a little older. By 1964 she became a full
time employee. Her forte was the bookkeeping machine, a large machine with a huge carriage
capable of filling in all the necessary columns.
On March 7th, 1968 there as a new addition, Patricia Leigh McCabe was born and John and
Evelyn couldn’t have been happier. Evelyn would slow her work load, and do much of her work
at home. She would continue to work for McCabe’s until 1998? When she retired. She did a
few odd jobs after that, played bridge with old friends, watched the Atlanta Braves, and went
to dog shows with Trish.
On July 13, 2012, John passed away, and shortly thereafter, Triish sold the home on Council
Bluff, and she and Evelyn moved to a new home in Canton. Evelyn had begun to suffer from
mild dementia. Eight years later it would claim her life. At her passing, a childhood friend,
whose mother had been Evelyn’s best friend from that neighborhood in the 1950’s, sent a
message “She (Evelyn) was the last warrior that I know of in a great generation of women.”
Funeral service will be held at Westview Cemetery at later date.
