Early on the morning of December 31st, Evelyn Kathleen Hendon McElroy, of Avondale Estates, GA, passed from this life a week before her 97th birthday; a result of complications from both a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease and a broken hip.

Evelyn was the widow of Walter G. McElroy, Jr., formerly a Division Manager for MARTA; both were natives of Atlanta. They enjoyed a marriage of 53 years until “Mac’s’ death in 1994. They are survived by their only child, Michael G. McElroy, also of Avondale Estates, and many other loving, extended family members.

Evelyn was an honor graduate of Fulton High School, and had a varied and successful business career, which included MGM Motion Pictures, Circulation Chairman of the Garden Clubs of Georgia, and as the Property Manager for C&A Land Company, a developer of luxury high rise apartment buildings in Atlanta, somehow making the time to be an active, devoted and supportive wife and mother.

She was a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church, a founding member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, and later a long time member of The First Baptist Church of Avondale Estates. Along with her husband, they sponsored life changing surgeries for children through the Scottish Rite Hospital, as well as the Special Olympics, and a number of Christian charities.

She enriched the lives of all who knew her, and many who didn’t; she will be greatly missed.
