Evelyn Virginia Jackson

November 19, 1919 — March 31, 2013

Evelyn Virginia Baker Jackson, 93, of Decatur passed away on Sunday March 31, 2013. She was born in Lincoln County, GA on November 19, 1919, to George Frank and Nannie Baker. Mrs. Jackson grew up in Augusta GA and graduated from Tubman High School in 1938. She married William Arthur Jackson, Jr. on December 23, 1938, and during WW II she accompanied him on Navy assignments to San Francisco and San Diego. She worked at the Augusta Arsenal and for the US Navy in San Diego. When the family moved to Decatur in 1953 she became a full time housekeeper. After their retirement she and Arthur enjoyed numerous cross country trips in their motor home. They also traveled to Mexico, Europe and Hawaii. Mrs. Jackson was known by her family and friends for her gifts of pecan pies, peach preserves and ginger snaps. She was also known for remembering birthdays, sending hundreds of cards to her family and many acquaintances. She was a member of the Philathea Sunday School class at Decatur First Baptist Church. Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by sisters, Ruth Strauch, Doris Grant, Betty Patterson and brothers, Rev. George, Harold, and James Baker. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Jackson Jr. and daughter, Nancy Ruth Hendrix. She is survived by son, Art (Anita) Jackson of Raleigh, NC; daughters, Pamela (Herb) Byerly of Spokane, WA; Florence (Scott) Mathis of Atlanta, and son in law, Rosdon Hendrix of Roswell, GA. Also surviving are sisters, Earline Elliott of Hephzibah, GA and Juanita Wolpert of Pensacola, FL; brother, Charles Baker of Nottingham, NH; The joys of her life were her eight grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren; Jeff and Kathleen Hendrix, Leigh, Gerald, Anna and Brenna Cassidy, Bert, Monica, Jaeden, Ella and Scarlett Byerly; Jessica, Eric, Jackson and Charlie Dines; Will, Sarah, Katie and Emily Jackson; Stuart, Melissa, Tyler and Madeline Jackson; Amy, Ryan and Joseph Burke; and Chris, Heather and Adeline Bugg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to First Baptist Church of Decatur. Funeral services for Mrs. Jackson will be held at 10:00 am Friday April 5th in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons with Rev. Julie Pennington-Russell and Dr. Peter Rhea Jones officiating. Interment will be in Westover Cemetery, Augusta, GA at 12:00 noon on Saturday April 6th. The family will receive friend on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
