Fern Jewel Bogle, formerly of Kokomo, Ind., died March 18, 2018, in Atlanta, Ga., at the age of 91.
Mrs. Bogle was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. A homemaker extraordinaire, she was a pillar of the Kokomo community and a stalwart partner to her husband of 59 years, Victor M. Bogle, who served as Chancellor of Indiana University at Kokomo from 1959 to 1979.
Mrs. Bogle was born in Milltown, Ind., on May 31,1926, the daughter of Noble and Gertrude (Johnson) Schenk. A consummate hostess, she relished entertaining family, friends and dignitaries at the family’s home at 511 W. Taylor St., which she lovingly restored to its Victorian-era glory and decorated with antiques she collected throughout her life. She gave back to her community by donating her time to causes she believed in, and gathering and distributing clothing for those in need. The YWCA honored her for her outstanding service, and as a member of the Democratic women’s group in Kokomo, she received a letter from Robert F. Kennedy thanking her for helping host a reception for his wife Ethel in 1968.
Mrs. Bogle is survived by her two daughters, Heather Lea Bogle and April Lea Bogle, both of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Kenneth Miles Wilkerson and Anna Taylor Booth, also both of Atlanta; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bogle was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her brother Owen Schenk of Sellersburg, Ind., and sisters Vera Bennett and Martha McCaffrey, both of New Albany, Ind.
A memorial service will be held March 28 at 1 p.m. at the Fountainview Center, 2631 N. Druid Hills Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30329. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chancellor and Mrs. Victor M. Bogle Scholarship in care of the IU Foundation, PO Box 6460, Indianapolis, IN 46206-6460. The scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. Bogle to fund a student of history or political science.
