Fleming Hammond Boyd, 90, Atlanta, died Tuesday June 9th, 2015. He was born in Greenville, SC, June 30, 1924, the son of William Baron and Mabel Hammond and graduated from Greenville HS and Clemson University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He served in the US Army Air Corps 1940- 1944 as a B-17 co-pilot with active duty in England and missions over France and Germany. He worked as a engineer for Western Electric, McPherson Co. and JE Sirrine Co. He came to Atlanta in 1957 with 8 other engineers to form Eastern Engineering Co specializing in paper mill and power plant construction. He was a charter member of Briarcliff United Methodist Church, involved in all phases of it growth, serving as chairman of the board of stewards, chairman of building committee for the education building, trustee committee, building and grounds committee and men's club. A past member of Friendship Sunday school class. In retirement, he volunteered time with Wesley Haven, a day care for the elderly. He also volunteered time with Emory Healthcare, was awarded volunteer of the year and a lifetime achievement award for service to Wesley Woods. He was predeceased by William B Boyd III, Robert B. Boyd. He is survived by a sister Claire B Weston, of Greenville, SC, his wife of 67 years, Alice Evans Boyd, sons Edwin Ogilby Boyd (Elaine), Metter GA, David Hammond Boyd (Barbara), Dunwoody, James William Boyd (Maureen) Hampton CT, and daughter, Anne Boyd Stroer, Brookhaven, six grandchildren, Melanie Boyd Martin, Stephanie Boyd, Jillian Boyd, Devin Boyd, Claire Stroer, David Stroer, one great grandson, Matthew Martin. Visitation will be 6pm to 9pm Wednesday June 10th at A. S. Turner and Sons, North Decatur Rd. A memorial service will be held at Briarcliff United Methodist Church at 10am on Thursday June 11th. Memorials may be made to Briarcliff United Methodist Church or to scholarship fund of Garden Club of Georgia toward the Fleming Boyd Memorial Scholarship.
