Forrest Esh McMahan passed away Monday, January 27, 2014. Mr. McMahan, also known to many as Butch, was born on December 31, 1949 in Decatur, the middle son of John Oren McMahan and Mary Esh McMahan. Survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Libby Earnhardt McMahan, Mr. McMahan also leaves behind his daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Trip Williamson of Decatur; sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Kristie McMahan of Decatur, Andy and Jill McMahan of Chapel Hill, NC and Peter and Christie McMahan of Atlanta. Mr. McMahan's grandchildren are Lily McMahan, Olivia McMahan, Macie Williamson, Owen Williamson, Bennett Williamson, Nora McMahan, and Avery McMahan; and brother, John (Yvonne) McMahan and sister, Susan (Chip) Fink. Butch served in the U.S Navy from 1970-74. Butch, a board certified pedorthist, was the second-generation owner of McMahan Shoes in Atlanta, and served as President of the Board for Certification in Pedorthics. He was also a longstanding member of the Prescription Footwear Association, and involved in various philanthropic organizations including Soles for Souls: Wearing Out Poverty. In what proved to be the best decision of his life, Butch married his high school sweetheart Libby Earnhardt in 1971. Together Butch and Libby raised four children, and more recently enjoyed being grandparents to an ever-growing number of grandchildren who adored their PaPaw. Butch had a passion for woodworking, fishing, and smoking meats in his Big Green Egg; the fruits of which have been enjoyed by friends and family for many years. Butch also loved to stay active; including running in over 25 Peachtree Road races and daily workouts at the gym where he formed countless wonderful friendships with those known as the Breakfast Club. Whether you knew him as Forrest or Butch his warm smile and friendly personality ensured he never met a stranger. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Decatur First United Methodist or a charity of your choice. A memorial celebration will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, January 30th at Decatur First United Methodist Church, 300 East Ponce De Leon Ave, Decatur. The family will have visitation on Thursday , January 30 after the memorial services at the church.
