Frances Blakeney Coker

Frances Blakeney Coker, age 90, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2022. She was born on July 6, 1931 in Charlotte, NC to James Albert Blakeney, Jr. and Willie Blount Blakeney. She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, NC in 1949 and continued her education at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, GA where she received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in 1953. She taught eight grade Georgia History at Bass High School in Atlanta, GA for ten years. On June 15, 1957, she married the love of her life, Byron Lee Coker, Sr. of Atlanta, GA.. Frances was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She especially enjoyed times when everyone would gather for holidays and special occasions. She was a faithful Christian and longtime member of Clairmont Hills Baptist Church where she served as a church librarian and with the sign language ministry. She was an accomplished artist producing many watercolor paintings, and she enjoyed working in her garden. After her children were in school, Frances returned to teaching at Heritage Elementary as a speech paraprofessional. After retirement, she and Byron enjoyed traveling and spending time at their mountain cabin and farm. She is survived by her husband Byron Lee Coker, Sr. (who passed away 5 days later); her siblings: Margaret Blakeney Bullock of Kernersville, NC, and James Albert Blakeney, III of Pearisburg, VA; her children: Byron Lee Coker, Jr. (Shane), Caroline Coker Meadows (Chip), Katherine Coker Moses (Paul), her grandchildren: Blythe Coker, Aubrey Coker, Megan Meadows, Matthew Meadows, and Joshua Moses, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 10 am with a memorial service to follow at 11 am at Bridgepoint Church at Toco Hills (1995 Clairmont Road, Decatur). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Parkinson’s Foundation or Bridgepoint Church..
