Mrs. Frances Arkley Herndon of Merritt Island, FL, passed away on September 13, 2010, at The Health Center of Merritt Island, Merritt Island, FL after a prolonged illness. Mrs. Herndon had recently celebrated her 90th birthday, and was a former resident of Decatur, GA. She was pre-deceased by her loving husband of twenty-five years, Mr. Robert S. Herndon, on December 28, 1997. Mrs. Herndon was born in Springfield, MA on August 9, 1920, and moved with her family to Miami, FL in 1925. She attended and graduated from Miami Edison High School in Miami, FL, graduated from Stetson University in Deland, FL, where she had a full scholarship in voice, and received Bachelor of Arts degrees in both music and education. Mrs. Herndon taught music and was a choral director in the Dade County, FL and Dekalb County, GA school systems, loved by all her students, several of whom kept in touch with her even after her retirement. Mrs. Herndon is survived by two daughters, Janet W. Gould of Merritt Island, FL, Susan C. Rogers of Sarasota, FL; six stepchildren, James Stumon Herndon (Linda) of Stone Mountain, GA; Joseph Robert Herndon (Kelly) of Orlando, FL; John Edward Herndon (Anne) of Atlanta, GA; Jeanne Marie Woody of Conyers, GA; Janice Elaine Durham of Loganville, GA; and Jeffery Marshall Herndon of Kennesaw, GA; three grandchildren, Walter P. Gould of Opelika, AL, Wendi G. Jones of Cumming, GA, and Connie Montano of Clearwater, FL; and seven great grandchildren. In addition, Mrs. Herndon had twelve step-grandchildren, and ten step-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Herndon was very active in her beloved Druid Hills Presbyterian Church until she moved back to Florida to live closer to her daughter. A service celebrating Mrs. Herndon’s life will be held at 1:00 P.M. on September 25, 2010, at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, GA, followed by interment at Melwood Cemetery in Stone Mountain, GA.
