Francis Alfred Mason, age 75, died after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He handled this relentless illness with humor and hope to the very end. Born in Decatur, Georgia on October 1, 1939, he was the only son of the late Dr. Jesse W. Mason and Camille Mason. Alfred was a graduate of the class of 1957 of Decatur High School and played on the winning team at the Georgia AAA state basketball championship his senior year. He served as a member of the U.S. Coastguard and was a graduate of The Georgia Institute of Technology where he continued his love of sports as a Georgia Tech fan all of his life.
He began his career building a small business joined by Tech friend, Richard Hall. As specialty contractors in Atlanta commercial construction, they built a successful business that continues today. Alfred never met a stranger and had the ability to connect to people with his personality, quick wit, and humor.
Alfred's passion besides golf was travel. He and his family and friends shared some wonderful trips. Some of his favorite trips were to Scotland and Ireland where he and his friend, Gene Bothwell played those famous golf courses they had always dreamed of. Gene is that most loyal friend who helped care for him throughout his long years of illness.
He is survived by his wife Jill, who lovingly cared for him during the past 50 years. He dearly loved his two daughters, Paige Sullivan (son-in-law Joe), and Leigh Mason Hummel, along with adored grandchildren Nicholas and Sydney Sullivan and Mia Hummel.
The family wishes to thank the kind staff and the many loving and devoted caregivers at Dogwood Forest of Cumming, Georgia and the Hope Center Memory Care of Dacula, along with many health care professionals and the supportive, compassionate care of Halcyon Hospice.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 1:00PM for visitation before the memorial service in the funeral chapel at 2:00PM.
