Fred Grady Chapman, Jr.

Fred Grady Chapman, Sr. passed away on Friday, January 18, 2019 at age 96 in
Hendersonville, North Carolina. Fred was born May 7, 1922 in Carnesville, Georgia,
but spent most of his youth in Clarkston. He graduated from Clarkston High School in
1939. He was the first member of his family to complete High School. After
graduation he moved to Charleston, South Carolina where he worked in the ship yards
before joining the Navy in 1942. He served during WWII on a PT boat in the English
Channel. After the war in Europe ended he was transferred to the Pacific where he
served on the US Destroyer, Chevalier.

After the war he went to work for Lathem Time Recorder Company in Atlanta.
Beginning his career as a repairman, he retired as Executive Vice President. While
working at Lathem he met Lenora Hughes. They were married on New Years Eve 1953.
They had three children Necia Carol Silvers, Fred Grady Chapman, Jr., and James
Albert Chapman.

Fred was a kind and generous man. For many years he served on the deacon board at
Clarkston Baptist Church. He also served on the Clarkston City Council for several
terms. He and Lenora enjoy traveling, especially trips across this beautiful country they
both loved. Their favorite vacations involved train trips aboard Amtrak.
Fred’s favorite sport from a young age was throwing horse shoes and he was good.
He also enjoyed playing golf and growing vegetables in his backyard. He was blessed
with good health and remained active until the very end of his life.
Fred is survived by his three children, Necia and Terry Silvers, Fred and Carol Ann Chapman and James and Donna Chapman, thirteen grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren. A funeral service for Mr. Chapman will be held Monday, January21, 2019 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Due to the National Holiday, Interment will be Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Melwood Cemetery.
