FREDERICK BROWN WHITTINGTON, JR.

Frederick Brown Whittington, Jr., born September 22, 1934, in McComb, Mississippi, died January 7, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was Professor of Business Administration, emeritus, at the Goizueta Business School of Emory University.
He was the only child of Frederick Brown and Zita Holmes Whittington. After his graduation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and served at sea in the Pacific. He continued in the Naval Reserve for twenty-seven years, completing numerous tours of duty at sea and ashore. He served as Commanding Officer of five different Naval Reserve units and retired in the rank of Captain.
After his active naval service, he earned his MBA at Tulane University, where he earned membership in Beta Gamma Sigma honorary society. He then took his PhD at Louisiana State University,
His first academic appointment was at Emory University in 1969, where he taught until his retirement in 1995. After retirement from Emory, he was Guest Professor in residence for eight years at Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. At Emory, he received several awards, including the Donald Keough Award for Faculty Excellence and induction into the Omicron Delta Kappa honorary society. In Austria, he received the Silver Medal of the Austrian Marketing Research Society and the Rudolph Trauner Prize for academic innovation.
He cherished his years in Austria and his Austrian friends.
A quiet spirituality was an important part of his life. He was a member of Decatur Presbyterian Church for over fifty years and served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons.
He is survived by his wife of sixty five years, Marjorie (Penny) Babington Whittington, son Frederick Brown, III, (wife Vanessa) daughters Ellen (husband Sam) and Lisa (husband Tom), seven grandchildren, Sara, Emily, Mallory (husband Samuel), Charles, Will, Stephen and Elisabeth, and one great grandchild, Robert.
Brown loved his family, the sea, travel, tennis, bodysurfing, dogs, good food, wine and beer, opera, traditional country hymns, teaching, and civilized conversation. He was a life member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and a life member of the Druid Hills Golf Club.
The family wishes to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Kathy Armistead, Trish Allen, and the entire devoted staff of Park Springs who lovingly cared for our father for the past ten years.
A memorial service will be held at Decatur Presbyterian Church, 205 Sycamore Street, Decatur, Georgia on Thursday, January 16 at 3:00pm, with a reception following in the Keith Parlor. Burial will be a private family service in Franklinton, Louisiana.
