George Howard Smith

George Howard Smith passed away on March 10, 2011. He was predeceased by his wife,
Sarah Jane Smith, of 58 years. George was born on April 18, 1924 in Chicora,
Mississippi to Florine Oliver Smith and Leonard Charles Smith. His family then moved
to Gainesville, Florida where he and his two siblings were raised. He is survived by his
sister Helen Smith Graham of Gainesville, Florida and Leonard Charles Smith of
Sebring, Florida. During World War II, George served with the 821st Combat Military
Police in the European Theatre. He returned to Gainesville in 1946 where he received a
B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Florida. While attending the
University of Florida he was an active member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. George and
his lovely wife, Sarah Jane, were relocated to Atlanta in 1964 with Southern Bell, where
they raised their two daughters and resided for the next 47 years. They were active
members of Holy Trinity Parish in Decatur. George was an avid gardener and enjoyed
swimming, collecting clocks, refinishing furniture, and looking for that perfect antique.
He and Sarah Jane enjoyed traveling both in the United States and abroad. While
residing at Lenbrook for the past 13 months,' George continued to enjoy his passion for
swimming and developing new friendships. George will be truly and profoundly missed
by his children, Jane Smith Trantham and husband, Joe, of Panama City, Florida and Ann
Howard Smith and husband, Scott, of Atlanta; Georgia his grandchildren, Katherine
Trantham of Montgomery, Alabama and Caroline Trantham of Pensacola, Florida. He
was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and his memory is treasured by those
fortunate to have been touched by his rich and generous life. Funeral services for Mr.
Smith will be held Saturday March 12, 2011 at 2:30PM at Holy Trinity Parish, 515 E.
Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
may be made to Holy Trinity Parish.
